Quando se recebe um Kindle (parte 2, no Brasil)

Os nossos colegas do Kindle Blog Brasil chamaram a atenção para um post interessante sobre uma compradora brasileira do Kindle que descreve a sua experiência. Ela ficou conquistada.

"Oi, Ana!
Que boa ideia foi comprar o Kindle!
Tudo bem que ele não é nenhuma novidade (já está na terceira geração), mas eu resisti muito. Assim como você, eu também tinha a sensação de que ele viria para “roubar” o lugar dos livros de papel.
Não é bem assim… Uma coisa pode muito bem conviver com a outra.
Já estou usando o Kindle há três ou quatro dias e posso dizer: foi um dinheiro muito bem gasto!
Paguei U$ 139, mais frete e impostos. No total deu um pouco menos de R$500 (o e-reader nacional da Positivo, sem os mesmos recursos, sai por R$700).

Novo Nook com ecrã táctil - leitor de ebooks da Barnes and Noble

A Barnes & Noble, a famosa cadeia de livrarias americana acaba de lançar um novo leitor de ebooks com e-ink, tinta electrónica, com ecrã táctil.

O novo equipamento irá custar 139 Dólares e possui ligação Wi-fi (não possui cartão 3G). Depois de ter lançado um leitor de ebooks com LCD, que é um pequeno tablet Android, a Barnes & Noble lança um equipamento com um ecrã com e-ink (tinta electrónica) o que prova que esse tipo de ecrãs continua a fazer sentido para os leitores de livros digitais.

Por outro lado, nada melhor que a concorrência para melhorar a qualidade dos produtos. Veremos, pois, como reagirá a Amazon a esta novidade...

"On a recent long jaunt around the Aegean, I realized something important about the Kindle: it’s the ultimate travel gadget.
I honestly didn’t expect this. I just brought mine so I’d have something to read! But here’s the deal:
  • The Kindle has a web browser. It’s simple and slow, but solid enough to check Gmail and mobile.twitter.com. In fact, it works beautifully with the mobile versions of most sites.
  • It’s almost miraculously connected. The browser wouldn’t mean much if Whispernet—Amazon’s set of carriage agreements with cell networks around the world—didn’t work everywhere. It does, and it’s also free. I was using Edge and 3G Whispernet reliably in remote-ish provinces and on sleepy islands. In fact, my Kindle generally got a stronger signal than my iPhone.
  • It’s light and durable. There’s a big difference between older Kindles (which I’m toting) and newer ones in this regard; I’m considering snagging one of the latest simply because they’re so much smaller, slimmer and lighter. But any Kindle is more portable than any iPad, and I also felt a lot more comfortable tossing the Kindle into a bag or dragging it across the beach. (I had my iPad on this trip, too, but barely used it.)
  • The Kindle works in direct sunlight. Especially when you’re traveling, this is a big deal. Standing on a busy corner or sitting on the beach, the Kindle is always totally usable. And this provides another contrast to the iPad, which always sends me scurrying to the shadows. (It really is a resolutely indoors device, isn’t it?)
  • The battery lasts forever. You know this already. My Kindle was on a once-a-week charging schedule, and that’s with lots of reading and regular internet checks.
  • Your Kindle is your itinerary. Using the Kindle as a virtual folder for travel documents was perhaps the biggest aha; it was my traveling companion who figured this out first. We got into the habit of forwarding tickets and reservations straight to our kindle.com addresses, which all Kindle owners have. (Oddly, this is the one part of international service that’s not free, but the price is negligible: $0.99 per megabyte for documents delivered this way.) It feels so good to have all of your information right there, in a format that’s so legible—not just to you, but to others. Once, in Turkey, I simply passed my Kindle to a ticket agent to help her understand where we were trying to go.
  • Travel guides on the Kindle work great. I was a little skeptical about this—I think of the Kindle as being bad at random-access material, and a travel guide is definitely one of those books you want to be able to flip through freely. But as it turns out, we got a ton of use out of a Lonely Planet Kindle edition—purchased mid-trip, natch—and by the end of the trip, I felt like a dope for having bothered with a physical guide (which weighed in at about five Kindles).
Honestly, even if you are not ever going to read an e-book, but want a device to help you stay connected and organized while traveling—especially if you’re going a bit off the beaten track—the investment in a Kindle (barely more than a hundred bucks at this point) can’t be beat."

"DRM é uma sigla para Digital Rights Management, ou Gerenciamento de Direitos Digitais em tradução livre.
Vamos pensar em livros “físicos”, impressos, por um momento. Um livro impresso você pode emprestar e vender. Mas quando você faz isso, fica sem o livro. Com os e-books, isso não acontece. E-books são apenas arquivos eletrônicos que podem ser copiados inúmeras vezes e passados adiante inúmeras vezes. O DRM foi planejado e criado para prevenir a cópia ilimitada de um arquivo eletrônico (embora alguns consumidores de e-books também reparem que é uma mão na roda para as empresas “trancarem” os e-books dentro das suas próprias marcas).
O DRM designa para os e-books vários “direitos”, determinados pela editora ou pelo vendedor. Alguns podem ser lidos em mais de um aparelho ao mesmo tempo. Outros permitem cópia parcial, outros podem até permitir impressão. Alguns só podem ser baixados poucas vezes, outros apenas uma única vez. Você pode ficar tentado a remover o DRM usando softwares e scripts fornecidos por hackers e crackers… mas isso é ilegal. Não incentivamos, nem recomendamos que qualquer pessoa faça isso.
Agora que o DRM foi tratado de forma objetiva, vamos a um pouco de análise e opinião."

ePub no Kindle - Rumores continuam

De acordo com o blogue "Futurebook" a Amazon terá dito a editores americanos que irá aceitar ficheiros no formato ePub no futuro próximo e que irá igualmente permitir que o kindle leia ficheiros em ePub.

Este passo iria igualmente facilitar o acesso aos utilizadores do Kindle aos livros da bibliotecas americanas em formato digital, o que é um factor importante na massificação do Kindle nos Estados Unidos.

Como anuncia o jornal Público esta quinta-feira,


"Pela primeira vez, a venda de livros electrónicos da Amazon ultrapassou a venda de livros em papel. Por cada 100 edições impressas, o site vendeu 105 electrónicas.

O anúncio foi feito esta quinta-feira, num comunicado da Amazon que, como é habitual, não revela números exactos das vendas. A Amazon frisa que o rácio não tem em conta os livros electrónicos gratuitos e que o total de livros electrónicos suplantou o das edições impressas mesmo tendo em conta que algumas obras ainda não estão disponíveis em formato digital."

O site americano Goodereader avançou esta quarta-feira, 18 de Maio que a Amazon está a ser pressionada para que o Kindle possa ler, e permitir a compra de ficheiros ePub com DRM, o que permitiria a compra de livros para o Kindle em qualquer loja electrónica que não a Amazon...
